An Experience That Transformed My Perspective: A Pigeon Plummeted From the Heavens – and She Led to a Covert Underground Aid Organization

T battled through successive sheets of freezing rain during the approach into the city. A sense of dread settled over me during the trip, only deepening as I made my way through the terminal. I felt bitter over having to be the place where I had been raised, after residing on the far side of the world for what had felt like a an eternity.

After a few days, I went out to get a trim. My mind was far away, back across an vast expanse of water, when I was startled by something smack into the pavement. I gazed down to see a rock dove on its wings, splayed out, and trembling.

The impact took place just as kids were filing out from the local elementary school and so within moments a group of children had gathered, surrounded by their mums and dads. This circle of bemused faces peered down at the creature, unsure what to say or do. The kids were more certain: “Papa, she needs a vet, can we call an emergency service?” I removed my coat, knelt down and scooped the pigeon up into it. “It’s okay, love, the nice man will look after her!” remarked one mother with a audible relief. I had been transformed into the emergency transport for this pigeon that had just fallen suddenly, unintentionally, as I had a short time earlier.

I walked slowly home, arms ramrod straight, with the bird curled up inside the garment.

Unbeknownst to me that my spontaneous decision to medivac Belinda (the name I gave my patient) would guide me to a network of local residents sacrificing significant amounts of effort to provide not only rescue services for street birds but X-rays, respite care, and even “pigeon physio”.

I retrieved a small container for Belinda, lined it with an old T-shirt, and put her inside. Every half hour or so, I’d open the box just long enough for us to awkwardly lock eyes.

Those moments of common bewilderment punctuated my desperate search for what to do from there. I called friends for guidance and one suggested trying social media, where, to my astonishment, I stumbled upon a Manchester Pigeon Rehab group, and submitted a request to join.

An Anarchic Model

With a large membership, the group follows an anarchic method: someone in Manchester discovers an injured pigeon, a urgent post is published, then a comment section “evaluation” follows. If the bird is deemed in need of an scan, someone with a vet link can get it one; if it needs therapy, a “rehabber” will volunteer to look after the bird.

Carers each have their own carefully cultivated expertise, whether it’s mending broken wings or dressing wounds. Their significant, cooperative effort for the pigeons of the city is powered solely by goodwill.

Belinda was promptly diagnosed with neurological problems, likely a blow to the head, and placed with a rehabber who would give pain relief and a course of gentle physio. We never discovered exactly what made her to fall from the sky. I resumed the role of pigeon ambulance once more, riding the tram across the city with Belinda in a box on my lap so she could get the treatment she needed.

A New Perspective

After finding this secret pigeon “health service”, I began to feel much more positive about being back in my home town. I doubt any of the places I had resided in while away could boast anything even close. It also dawned on me that this was not the first time I’d been involved in a pigeon rescue: almost 20 years earlier I’d witnessed one fall from the sky into the playground of my secondary school. Again, children surrounded the bird, but only one – my best friend at the time – had the gall to rescue it and take it to a safe place.

The individual has since died – one of a number of companions to die in the years before my leaving from Manchester. I came to see that this had been a big part of what had made returning home so painful.

Feathered Support

Pigeons have a longstanding role as “therapy” animals, especially in the North. Workers started to keep the birds because they gave them comfort and an excuse to stare at the open air between long shifts of subterranean gloom. During the hard times, workers on the unemployment also found solace in pigeons, but keeping them was seen as a sign of “social malaise”.

Nowadays, pigeons are often written off as stupid, diseased or a annoyance. Before finding the rehab group, I had spoken to a veterinarian, who told me: “if you bring that here, leave it in the lot and we’ll put it down.”

That? Not her. Although not expected to ever take to the skies , she has taken to her newly grounded life with success in a volunteer’s spare bedroom. Each contented coo, often caused by her favourite treat, vegetables, feels like a lesson in adaptability and resilience – and I am eternally thankful to her for unveiling for me a new dimension to the city I believed I understood.
