An Ode to Strength: Lessons to Glean from the Splendour of Accra's Cultural Festival.

Following more than fifty installments exploring the international Black diaspora, this represents a last dispatch. The journey proved incredibly fulfilling, with great thanks extended to every one of the dedicated readers.

A Look Inside the Accra Festival

Visiting the displays, presentations and acts of Accra Cultural Week, observers witness how exceptional art feeds and shapes a nation's heritage and essence. The focal point was certainly Clottey's stunning a profound exploration of ritual and time, which put his pioneering afrogallonism for all to see: a philosophy that reimagines water vessels into illusory creations, tapestries of yellow, brass and gold. The exhibition was conceived as a homage to the endurance of Jamestown, a venerable quarter of Accra.

This area – predominantly inhabited by the Ga ethnic group, a seafaring people – is additionally where many formerly enslaved people came back from Brazil and established themselves in the 1830s. Referred to as the Tabom community, they introduced Portuguese tongue and traditions.

In every part of Jamestown, visitors encounter a fusion of architecture. Standing is Franklin House, boasting its unique colonial-era brickwork and arched doorways. One can also see the famous beacon, built in the 19th century and eventually sporting its recognizable red-and-white-striped exterior.

Traditions of Celebration

Also remarkable about Jamestown is the ever-present sight of funeral posters. Wherever you look, whether plastered over buildings or on larger billboards, you’ll see service information and terms of mourning. In Jamestown, mirroring customs in Ghana, funerals are large-scale community celebrations.

In the artist's impressive exhibition, all of the sensory and spiritual landscape of Jamestown are evoked – especially in the immersive beach-themed work. In this space, one is relaxed by the audio of crashing waves with beach material on the floor, while shacks, draped nets and representations of vessels pay homage to its spirited, long-standing fishing community. Yet experiencing this venue, it's hard to ignore the piles of cast-off garments that mar the beauty and peace of the area.

Beyond the Centrepiece

Accra Cultural Week also features much more. Within an incomplete building at the local university, artist Reginald Sylvester II exhibited On the Other Side of Languish, an emotionally powerful, minimalist presentation that displayed three-dimensional works and paintings produced in collaboration with welders.

Also featured was the Yaa Asantewaa Art prize for female Ghanaian artists. It included the first solo show of a recent winner, whose work utilizes familial archival records to create a depiction of life in Ghana after independence. The event also announced a current champion, whose multidisciplinary work is intensely invested in the textile traditions of women in Dabala.

An Enduring Impact

Although the diaspora has grown been attracted home to Ghana during the winter months, a growing cohort are considering travelling some months earlier to engage with the area's festival period. From this festival and regional art fairs, what is evident are cultural ecosystems that are not simply emerging or “rising” but have established an whole world that is permanent.

In the end, the journey offers a perception of Accra that feels like a declaration for environmental protection and the preservation of heritage. It is a powerful testament to adaptability in all its manifestations.
