Big Difficulties in ‘Tiny Berlin’: The Small Village Divided in Half by the Cold War Period

An brook so narrow you barely got your ankles wet separated a village for over four decades of time. Due to a quirk of topography, the half a hundred locals of Mödlareuth, a small village encircled by evergreen groves, pastures and spectacular scenery, found themselves at the heart of the cold war. They had the misfortune to span the Bavarian region, in the Federal Republic of Germany, and the Thuringian region in the Soviet sector, a border that was established first by a barrier and then by a wall. US troops called it Small Berlin.

Preserving History

Several months after their own barrier was opened, and before their country had become one in 1990, a collection of residents started documenting their past. The effort is close to come to fruition: on 9 November, the 36th annual anniversary of the collapse of the Berlin Wall, the Museum of German Division Mödlareuth will open. It was formally opened by the head of state, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in the beginning of October, but the show wasn’t quite ready. Telling the locals who lived through the past era, Steinmeier stated: “You were bystanders of an brutal split, which pulled households apart and turned neighbours into aliens.”

“You were witnesses of an inhuman division, which ripped households apart and turned neighbours into strangers.”

Historical Origins

Starting at its creation in 1810, the hamlet spanned the Bavarian Kingdom and the Reuss Principality, a noble lineage most famous for bestowing all its male descendants the name Heinrich and labeling them in order by birth order. As Steinmeier related to the crowd, the quirk did not stand in the path of the inhabitants socializing in the same inn, going to the very same religious building and sending their young ones to the very same learning center.

Following WWII Split

Next arrived the global conflict. As soon as they arrived, the Soviet forces erected wooden posts by the creek. For a year they seized the entire community, creating their control center in a dwelling on the Bavarian territory side, adorning it with a image of Stalin and a Soviet emblem. The American soldiers persuaded them to retreat back over the stream. For a while, villagers could still cross over, though as limitations increased they were forced to present identification, even though each person was aware who they were, and to return at after dark.

Intensification of Boundary Controls

After that, in 1952, came wire fencing and the formal closing of the boundary. In 1966, as in Berlin five years earlier, a wall was erected, with explosives, anti-tank obstacles and watchtowers. The villagers could still observe each other by scaling hills, but on the eastern side gesturing and shouting were prohibited. A female resident was placed on a GDR intelligence monitoring list for replying “back at you” to a Bavarian resident who greeted her “happy new year”.

Heritage Site Establishment

It was related to me accounts such as these tales by Robert Lebegern, the head of the institution, who has dedicated much of his working life building it. Locals were consulted in the initial phases about how much barrier they wanted to keep. They chose a section on the west edge, near where one of their own was able to flee in the darkest hours with a scaling tool, after which the boundary was substantially fortified.

Conserved Installations

2 observation towers are maintained together with a set of exhibits showing the most impactful events in the community’s past. As we walk, Robert Lebegern details the regulations: nobody could approach 5km of the boundary. Farmers had to obtain particular approval to look after their fields; the partner could use the agricultural equipment but under no circumstances both, for fear that they attempted to escape. Armed guards stood watch.

Wider Background

The frontier between West Germany and the German Democratic Republic extended nearly 900 miles, from the Baltic Sea in the north to here in the southern region. Berlin is recalled and documented the most, but more than two times more people (more than 300) lost their lives attempting to traverse it in countryside regions than in the metropolis. the director informs me that 95 percent of attempts to flee failed.

Village Life

The greater part of Mödlareuth’s locals were farmers or skilled workers, who adjusted to residing in the uncertain territory between a pair of ideological spheres by avoiding attention and caring for their farms. They did not endorsed the East German authorities nor resisted it, Lebegern clarifies.

Tourism

For tourists, however, the village became a kind of site of interest. About fifteen thousand visited every year, viewing tools in hand, to look – and then swiftly go away. In 1983, the American president, George Bush, was shown around by the national security head.

25 years after reunification, the television series, a broadcast production about a made-up village similar to Mödlareuth, led to renewed curiosity.

Modern Developments

The launch of the new museum – with a cafe, store, movie theater and sizable vehicle area – is likely to
