A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the metropolis of Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, widely recognized as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the city centre on Tuesday afternoon.
Officials stated the forty-year-old media personality was approached by a trio of assailants, with one opened fire on him before fleeing on foot.
The reason of the incident has not been established and no one has been arrested are in custody, according to authorities.
Authorities revealed that Stock was ambushed as he was exiting a building close to the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the property supervising the installation of security systems, which had been illegally inhabited by squatters, as per local media.
"It is alleged the deceased was confronted by three unidentified men after parking his vehicle, and they opened fire at him before escaping on foot," an official report said.
Surveillance tape showed a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a security uniform shooting on Stock before making his escape.
The DJ attempted to flee after he was wounded but fell down across the street.
Officials noted that Stock had an weapon on his person and no items were stolen during the incident.
Important clues, like bullet casings, were recovered from the scene.
Authorities have requested eyewitnesses who may have witnessed the attack to contact them.
"Our information indicates they walked a long distance after the attack, and investigators have been attempting to locate them to establish their destination," remarked an authority figure.
His family member, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.
"I am in shock. I don't have words," were her words.
"It is clear he was a representative for countless citizens. He addressed issues courageously about topics not many people were willing to speak about. This is a profound tragedy."
She urged the citizens to not sharing disturbing footage from the scene, saying this was an extremely painful time, particularly for Stock's children.
Stock was the star of Ngicel' iVisa, a television program that aired on a popular local broadcasting platform.
Apart from his role as a presenter, Stock was active in various business ventures, including protective services, providing high-level security services and protecting high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also understood to participate in building administration and participated in building evictions.
His death has shocked the country and led to an flood of condolences from his audience, the authorities and political parties.
A senior figure commented he was outraged and heartbroken by Stock's killing.
"He spoke his truth without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my actions as a minister. He was a shining model of who we must aspire to be," was his tribute.
A party figurehead stated the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a shock for all South Africans".
A media executive expressed that "Stock was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a gifted communicator, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought happiness and vitality to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an lasting impression."
In a statement, the broadcaster he worked for affirmed Stock was known for his presence, approachability and quick humor, adding that his memory "will be remembered".
