The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase revealed several fascinating future games, but one in particular has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player adventure appears to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill title with the paranoid deduction heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls within her must escape from a labyrinth of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of high school age. Inside her exist four distinct personas, all possessing unique fears and drives. These entities can take over spontaneously, unleashing their deep-seated phobias upon her without warning.
Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative takes place within a eerie hospital, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uneasy?" poses creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. People in power. Things that seem trivial to other people can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central mechanic revolves around managing whichever soul emerges at any given time. However, these identities will switch against your will as you play. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the girl in succession. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Initially, UN:Me shares striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is filled with orderlies who all share the same face, with unnervingly wide smiles. Patients in the waiting room have large blooms where their necks should be. Floral motifs are an ever-present element, contrasting natural beauty with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a unique mechanic. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the protagonist is the "true" one. "Each of the personas asserts that the physical form is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
After a player believes a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, because each soul can lie or hide the truth, it is incredibly simple to choose incorrectly.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," the narration suggests. "The final entity standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed launch window, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
